Terpenes
Terpenes (isoprenoids) - organic chemical compounds with the general formula (C5H8)n, the main skeleton of which was formed as a result of the combination of five-carbon isoprene units , therefore the number of carbon atoms in the terpene molecule is divisible by five. Isoprenoids are mostly classified as lipids. Scientists have identified more than 20,000 of them so far. Although most of them are well known and used in the cosmetics industry for the production of, for example, perfumes, medicines and essential oils, their function in nature has still not been thoroughly studied. The plant that produces the most terpenes is hemp.
Biochemists have identified about 200 different terpenes in cannabis.
The most common terpenes in cannabis include:
Alpha-pinene
Alpha-pinene, forming the well-known pine oil. This terpene is used m.in in the treatment of asthma, and also stimulates concentration and mating processes by inhibiting the metabolic breakdown of acetylcholinesterase, a neurotransmitter present in the brain that is responsible for cognitive processes. It is also present in pines.
Myrcene
Myrcene, one of the terpenes present in many cannabis strains, acts as a sedative, muscle relaxant, as well as hypnotic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It is also present in hops.
Limonene
Limonene, the most important terpene responsible for the citrus aroma, which is also found in lemon, lime and oranges. This terpene is used in medicine m.in to dissolve kidney stones and treat heartburn. Limonen has also proven its effectiveness in the treatment of breast cancer during clinical experiments and the destruction of various types of pathogens. We also find it in lemons.
Linalool
Linalool, a terpene present in both lavender and some cannabis strains. It has a calming and anti-stress effect. In addition, linalool enhances the mechanisms of serotonin transmission, which translates into an antidepressant effect. Linalool can also be used on the skin to treat scars and burns. Present, among others, in lavender.
Beta-caryophyllene
Beta-caryophyllene, a terpene found outside of hemp in black pepper, oregano and cloves, as well as many other herbs and vegetables. It protects the digestive system and helps in the treatment of, for example, ulcers, and recent clinical studies also show that it has anti-inflammatory and immune system-boosting properties. We will also find it in black pepper.
Humulene
Humulene, a terpene related to beta-caryophyllene commonly found in hops and hemp. It is he who is responsible for the hoppy aroma of beer. Humulene has been shown to have antibacterial, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anorexic (appetite suppressing) properties. This compound is very well known in traditional Chinese medicine, in which it has been used for many thousands of years.
Flavonoids (flavone compounds) – a group of organic chemical compounds found in plants, performing the function of dyes, antioxidants and natural insecticides and fungicides, protecting against attack from insects and fungi. Most of them are dyes accumulated in the surface layers of plant tissues, giving an intense color and limiting the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation .
The healing effect of some herbs is conditioned by the presence of appropriate flavonoids in them. Flavonoids have, among other things, the following effects:
antioxidant, conditioned by the ability to inhibit the activity of lipooxygenases and cyclooxygenases and the ability to chelate transition metal ions (e.g. iron), which participate in reactions leading to the production of reactive oxygen species
anti-inflammatory, thanks to the possibility of inhibiting the cascade of arachidonic acid transformations leading to the formation of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins . The anti-inflammatory effect is also observed as a result of flavonoids inhibiting the synthesis of histamine
diuretic by irritating the renal tubules and hindering return resorption in the kidneys.
Due to such a wide spectrum of pharmacological action, raw materials containing flavonoids are used in the treatment of many diseases. Flavonoids are, among others, a part of the following medicinal plants: with anti-inflammatory and strengthening effect on blood vessels.
