At the beginning of next month, new regulations will come into force to make it easier for patients to access preparations containing medical marijuana. A prescription for such a drug will be able to be prescribed by any doctor except veterinarians.

So who will be able to apply for this type of preparations? Everything will depend on the individual case and the will of the doctor because he will decide who to prescribe medical marijuana to.

After completing a special application for the possibility of therapy with preparations containing cannabinoids , you will need to provide appropriate documentation confirming that in a given case medical marijuana treatment will be the most effective therapy.

Medical marijuana contains mainly two components , CBD and THC. It comes from hemp grown according to strictly defined standards and is most often given in tablets, drops or in the form of dried cannabis in a dose determined by the doctor. Medical marijuana does not change the state of consciousness and does not cause a high. The effects occur after 30-90 minutes after taking and reach their maximum after 2-3 hours and last from 4 to 12 hours.

Humans and animals have two types of neuroreceptors that respond to the cannabinoids in marijuana, and these are the CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are most abundant in the central nervous system, primarily in the brain, and CB2 receptors are scattered mainly in places associated with the immune system.

Cannabinoids contained in medical marijuana support the treatment of many diseases, including killing cancer cells, reducing pain, showing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, suppressing epileptic attacks or relieving diseases of the digestive system.

The new regulations will come into force on 1 November under the amendment to the Act on counteracting drug addiction as well as the amendment to the Act on reimbursement of medicines, thanks to which the use of cannabis-based preparations containing the substance THC will be easier in Poland.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of reimbursement and the high price, medical marijuana will be available only to a few and only on prescription after going through a lot of paperwork.

So far, the most popular and most readily available cannabinoid is CBD oil containing non-psychoactive cannabidiol, which, like THC, has healing properties on its own. Nevertheless Cannabinoids occurring together side by side (CBD and THC) increase their potency and show stronger healing properties.
